Aino Aalto designed housewares for contemporary furnishings following the example of functionalism. Their approach was influenced by the architectural style of modernism, which strives for the honest use of materials and affordable mass production. Aalto's pressed glassware is one of her most notable designs. The collection was inspired by the water rings that are created when a stone is thrown into the water. The glasses could be admired for the first time at a competition organized by the Karhula Glass Factory in 1932. Aalto's Bölgeblick (as the collection was originally called) took second place. The collection went into production in the same year and continues to prove that basic design stands the test of time. The simple, space-saving shape lends itself to stacking and allows for versatility, while the timeless design of the Aino Aalto collection retains its freshness even after eighty years.
