The production is a detailed replica of an original ivory set made by the British company 'Jacques' around 1850 and purchased at a London auction in the 1990s. The English chess master Howard Saunton promoted this set at the first international chess tournament in 1851. Its distinct figures soon became the competition standard, known as the "Staunton" set. Although red and ivory pieces were common until the 20th century, other light and dark variations have been used throughout history. The maharajahs and nabobs of the Indian subcontinent even played with green and ivory stones! Our Grandmaster's Set in red and ivory is for players, lovers of beauty and art and for interiors with refined style who need a classic game board or a table that can be displayed at any time.
