Gigs were invaluable when they were anchored in port or outside. Referred to as rowing boats by land-based people, a gig was easy to leave overboard, required minimal crew, and was quick to ship. When stowed away, it nests in the long boat or pilot boat attached to the center of the main deck. The lapstrake gigs (overlapping wooden strips) aren't seaworthy, but they certainly look like it! They are built in clinker construction and add flair and atmosphere to any room, and the presentation shelves transform them into fun cabinets and bookshelves.
